Losses drop Barrie squad record to 7-8 on the season; Baycats travel to Guelph on Tuesday

CHATHAM – Chatham-Kent swept Barrie in a doubleheader Sunday.

Spencer Morin’s bases-clearing double in the sixth inning of Game 1 was the big blow in the Barnstormers’ 7-2 win. 

Morin scored on Torrin Vaselenak’s triple, and Evan Morrison cashed Vaselenak with a single to cap the five-run frame.

Vaselenak and Morrison also drove in a run in the fifth inning to pull the Barnstormers even.

Willy Garcia went 2-for-3 with a solo home run for the Baycats. Tristan Clarke singled twice and scored.

Aden Ryan (1-1) notched the win on the mound after four shutout innings of relief. He scattered three hits and struck out three. Starter Brock Whitson went the first three innings and allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and strikeout.

Ramon Henriquez (0-1) took the loss after giving up three runs in two-thirds of an inning. He didn’t allow a hit but walked four. Juan Benitez started and allowed two runs on three hits in five innings. He walked two and fanned five.

In Game 2, Yushin Ohta hit a solo home run in Chatham’s 7-4 win. Owen Constantineau doubled home a pair of runs, Braxton Haggith drove in a run, and Morrison went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Yuri Yokoyama (3-0) pitched five innings for the win. He was charged with two runs (one earned) on five hits with a walk and five punchouts. Eric Pettipiece retired the last two Baycats for the save.

Cesar Rosado took the loss. All five runs he allowed were unearned thanks to three Barrie errors. He scattered three hits over two innings while walking one and striking out two.

Chatham improved to 10-7, and Barrie dropped to 7-8.

Majors walk it off – again

LONDON – Toby Simmons’ two-out triple in the bottom of the ninth scored two and gave London a 7-6 victory over Brantford on Sunday, the team’s third straight walk-off home win.

Ken Sugi, who had the winning hit on Friday, drove in two, Byron Reichstein went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Eduardo De Oleo hit a solo home run as the Majors moved to 12-5.

Skylar Janisse tossed two innings of relief for the win on the mound. He was one out from locking down a save when Brantford’s Max Schmarder hit a two-run blast to put the Red Sox ahead for the first time in the game. Janisse (5-1) walked one and struck out two.

London starter Travis Keys went six innings and gave up two runs on nine hits with a strikeout.

For Brantford (3-14), Christian Ortega, Cassidy Watt and Brody Black all had two hits and an RBI. Rene Tachioka singled and doubled.

On the mound, Leandro Mejia (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. He walked one and struck out one. Connor Irvine started and went 6.2 innings, giving up four runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Leafs slug it out in Hamilton

HAMILTON – Marcus Knecht and Jordan Castaldo homered in Toronto’s 8-1 win on Sunday in Hamilton.

Knecht opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run blast that scored Castaldo, who walked. Castaldo’s three-run home run in the seventh put the game out of reach as Toronto improved to 10-7. Jhon Javier, Justin Marra and Spencer MacInnis all drove in a run.

Drew Howard (1-1) earned the win after giving up a run on three hits in four innings of relief. He walked one and struck out after taking over from Adam Jafine, who threw four two-hit innings. He walked three and struck out one.

Tyler Duncan drove in the lone run for Hamilton (7-8). Brandon Nicoll and Johnathan Solazzo each had a pair of hits.

Corben Peters (2-1) took the loss on the mound after yielding three runs on three hits in five innings. He walked three and fanned four.

Royals’ Takamatsu drives in eight

KITCHENER – Garrett Takamatsu drove in eight in Guelph’s 22-7 win Sunday afternoon in Kitchener.

The Royals’ third baseman drove in two with a single in the second inning and then connected for a three-run blast in the seventh. He added a two-run home run an inning later and finished his day with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Liam Wilson went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. He also scored four times. J.D. Williams had two hits and scored twice, Brando Leroux had an RBI, Andy Leader had four hits and three runs, Matthew Ward went 2-for-4, Anderson Fenwick drove in two, Ethan Hammond went 2-for-4 with three RBI, Jordan Gallo drove in four on three hits, and David Stanley was credited with an RBI the hard way after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The run support made a winner out of reliever Owen Newman (2-1), who threw two scoreless, hitless innings. Brandon Deans picked up a three-inning save. He didn’t allow a run and struck out five while working around five walks.

Panthers’ starting pitcher Yadian Martinez (3-4) took the loss after giving up nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits in five innings. He walked four and fanned five.

Offensively, Iyad Ansari went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Trent Lawson drove in two, Yordan Manduley went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Yunior Ibarra had an RBI, and Yosvani Penalver singled twice.

Guelph improved to 6-9, and Kitchener fell to 6-11.
