QUADEVILLE, ONT. — The secretary of a community centre in Quadeville says the tight-knit village in eastern Ontario is shaken after learning that a teenager has been arrested in an alleged attack on an eight-year-old child.

Wanda Resmer says she felt "a sense of shock" after police announced charges in the case that was initially suspected to be an animal attack.

Ontario Provincial Police say the eight-year-old, who had been reported missing, was found with life-threatening injuries in the early morning hours of June 24.

Police say they arrested a 17-year-old boy on Tuesday and charged him with attempted murder and sex assault with a weapon.

Resmer says the news left her heartbroken and numb and she thinks it will take a while to "get the fear out of" residents in Quadeville, about 170 kilometres west of Ottawa.

Police say an investigation is ongoing and they are planning to hold a town-hall meeting on Saturday to address questions and concerns from local residents.
