A Monique Crescent resident woke up to an unpleasant surprise Thursday morning.

Barrie police responded to the north-end neighbourhood, near St. Vincent and Livingstone streets, on June 26 after the homeowner discovered their 2024 white Toyota Highlander sport-utility vehicle (SUV) had been stolen out of the driveway sometime overnight.

“Police learned that the discovery was made at approximately 8 a.m. and the investigating officer was able to confirm that the stolen vehicle was last seen the night before,” said Peter Leon, the department’s communications co-ordinator.

The owner had last seen the vehicle after parking it in the driveway at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25.

Broken glass on the driveway also pointed to the likelihood that thieves had gained access to the vehicle by breaking a window.

Officers also located a duffel bag, which had been in the SUV, approximately three kilometres away, thanks to a tracking device that had been located inside the bag.

While the bag was recovered, Leon noted that the stolen SUV has not yet been found.

In a different incident, a 2019 white Dodge Ram that was reported stolen on June 19 has since been recovered by police.

The truck was discovered early Friday morning on Highway 400 in Georgian Bay Township, approximately 35 minutes north of Barrie.

The truck has since been towed to the Southern Georgian Bay OPP detachment in Midland where it will be examined by members of the Barrie police forensic identification unit in hopes of discovering any evidence that may help to identify those responsible for the theft.
